HISTORY OF PONY BASEBALL;
Pony baseball INC was formed in 1951 in Washington, PA. This was a transition league for 13 year olds and 14 year old players designed to provide youth who had graduated from Little League a place to continue to play orginzed baseball. As this was for 13-14 year olds, our 13-14 year old group is named "Pony League".
In 1953, a sister orginization to Pony League was formed for 15-16 year old players they called Colt. In 1959 Pony and Colt leagues were merged into a single orginization.
Since Pony was designed to prepare 13 and 14 year olds for High school the pitching distance 54' and base paths 80' were set at a distance to be in between that of little League 46' and 60' and the High school distance of 60' and 90'. Pony pitching distance of 54' and bases at 80' give every player a chance to pitch and lead off the bases like to big leaguers but still play on a field that fits their age and size.
